Espressivo Theater and La Polea Theater invite you to enjoy “La Nica”, a well-known play about migration, xenophobia and deprivation of Nicaraguans in Costa Rica, written by César Meléndez. This famous monologue will be interpreted by Cristina Bruno Catania, wife of the beloved actor. Performances will be from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 February at the Espressivo Theater. Hours: Fridays and Saturdays – 8:00 P.M. Sundays – 6:00 P.M.
Monologue is based on real events. An immigrant named María Espinoza speaks with transparency, humor and depth with a Crucified Christ. It shows the human face of a forced migration, the terrible uprooting, the bitter despair, the longings, the loneliness, the ephemeral joy, the love, the shortcomings, the cruelty, the hope and the faith.
“El Nica” was one of the most successful staging of Meléndez, presented for 15 years in an uninterrupted way in our country, with more than 2000 functions and seen by more than 900 thousand people, in more than 850 Costa Rican communities. Relevance of the piece lies in its content. On this occasion, and as a tribute to César’s memory, his wife decided to revive the play, transforming the main character in an immigrant woman named María Espinoza.
This staging is part of that scenic project in favor of communities and human groups eager to transmit values in a creative, dynamic, entertaining and fun way.
