Thomas Earl Petty (Gainesville, Florida, October 20, 1950-Santa Monica, California, October 2, 2017) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, known for his work leading the group Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and as co-founder of the The Traveling Wilburys supergroup in the late 1980s, where he played under the pseudonyms of Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury.
With The Heartbreakers, Petty recorded and released several hit singles, many of which are frequently performed on classic and adult contemporary rock radio stations. Throughout his career, Petty sold more than eighty million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling music artists.In 2002, he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
