Event Description:

Centro de Estudios Mexicanos UNAM and the Institute of Mexico in Costa Rica invite you to the Mexican film series with the screening “Huicholes Guardianes del Peyote”, on Thursday, July 25, at 10:00 am at Institute’s headquarters.

“Huicholes: The Last Guardians of Peyote” is a documentary as fascinating as it’s necessary. Fascinating because it allows us to enter the heart of one of Mexico’s most beloved indigenous groups: the Wixárika (wrongly called Huicholes); It immerses us in its cosmovision, its rituals and its colorful philosophy. Necessary, because the sacred place of this group, Wirikuta, has been threatened for a few years and all Mexicans have to defend this invaluable territory.

It was in 2010 when concessions were granted to Canadian mining companies fro exploring and exploiting the region. Since then, the Wixárika community and certain civil society actors have started a fight in defense of Wirikuta, which has been maintained to date and which, for now, has managed to stop the threat. Directed by Hernán Vilchez. Mexico, 2014.
